A magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic support, at least one-under coat layer formed on one surface of the non-magnetic support and containing non-magnetic powder and binder resin, at least one magnetic layer formed on this under-coat layer and containing magnetic powder and binder resin, and a back layer formed on the other surface of the non-magnetic support, characterized in that magnetic powder contained in the uppermost one of the magnetic layers is intrinsically spherical or oval rare-earth-iron based magnetic powder consisting of a rare-earth element and a transition element of iron or mainly consisting of iron, and has a number-average particle size of 5-50 nm and an average axial ratio of at least 1 and up to 2, with a total thickness of the magnetic medium being less than 6 žm. This magnetic recording medium can achieve an excellent block error rate unable to have been achieved by conventional recording media using needle-like magnetic powder. |
