A R-T-B based rare earth permanent magnet which comprises primary phase grains comprising a R2T14B compound and a grain boundary layer containing R in a higher proportion than that in the primary phase grain, and satisfies the formulae : AVE(X)/Y = 0.8 to 1.0, and (X/Y)max/(X/Y)min = 2.0 to 13.0, wherein X represents (the weight ratio of heavy rare earth elements)/ (the weight ratio of total rare earth elements) in a specific number of primary phase grains in a sintered product, Y represents (the weight ratio of heavy rare earth elements/ the weight ratio of total rare earth elements) in the whole sintered product, AVE(X) represents an average value of X determined for the specific number of primary phase grains, and (X/Y)min and (X/Y)max represent the minimum value and the maximum value of (X/Y) determined for the specific number of primary phase grains, respectively. |
