PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To amplify a light while making output intensity of each wavelength constant, even when the number of wavelength of an optical signal to be input is varied and presence or absence of an optical signal is varied intermittently like an optical packet signal or the like.
SOLUTION : This amplifier comprises : a semiconductor laser 2 which outputs a light whose specified wavelength is λL with constant output intensity; a semiconductor optical amplifier 3 which amplifies a part of the input optical signal and the output light of the semiconductor laser; an optical filter 4 which extracts only a λL component from the output light; and a means 5 for supplying another part of the input optical signal and the extracted λL component to a rare earth ion-added optical fiber 7. By utilizing a non-linear saturating phenomenon of the semiconductor optical amplifier, when optical signal intensity of the total of inputting wavelength λs1-λsn is large, optical intensity of the λL is made small. When optical signal intensity of the total of λs1-λsn is small, optical intensity of the λL is made large. Thereby, intensity of the entire light including the λL is always made constant, so that a gain of an optical amplifier is always constant, too. |
