PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To remove oxides as slag and to easily and inexpensively recover effective components in an alloy into reclaimable state by adding misch metal, etc., to a recovered hydrogen storage alloy powder and melting them in an inert gas or in vacuum. SOLUTION : A hydrogen storage alloy powder, recovered from the cathode of a nickel - hydrogen storage alloy secondary battery, is preferably formed into briquettes previously by means of a pressing machine or a briquetting machine. Then, misch metal, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, etc., are added by >=25wt.% to the hydrogen storage alloy powder, which is heated in an inert gas or in vacuum to about 900-1500 deg.C and melted. The oxides in the resultant molten alloy are separated as slag. By this method, the recovered hydrogen storage alloy is deoxidized without using a wet process and highly purified and is recovered as a raw material for an alloy for secondary battery, after being cast in a water cooled mold or in this state. |
