PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide : a catalyst for water splitting which has better handleability than before and has catalytic activity for thermolysis of water; and a hydrogen production method and hydrogen production apparatus using the same.
SOLUTION : The catalyst 1 for water splitting comprises an oxide 11 containing at least one rare earth element except Ce and at least one transition metal element. As the oxide 11, suitably used are Pr-Zr-Nd-based oxides or Pr-Zr-based oxides. The catalyst 1 for water splitting may further comprise at least one metal element 12 selected from the group consisting of noble metal elements, alkali metal elements, and alkaline earth metal elements. The hydrogen production method comprises : a hydrogen generation step of contacting water with the catalyst 1 for water splitting in a heated state and thermolyzing water to generate H2 and to make the catalyst 1 for water splitting capture oxygen; and an oxygen release step of bringing the catalyst 1 for water splitting having oxygen captured to a heated state so as to release O2.
