PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED : To provide a manufacturing method by which a rare earth iron-based permanent magnet can be obtained by use of anisotropic magnet powder simply and conveniently.
SOLUTION : A method for manufacturing a rare earth iron-based permanent magnet according to the present invention comprises : a compacting step of filling a powder mixture including anisotropic magnet powder of a rare earth iron-based magnet, and inorganic binder powder in a mold and compacting the powder mixture to obtain a compact; and a heating step of heating the compact obtained in the compacting step while applying a pressure thereto, thereby obtaining the rare earth iron-based permanent magnet. Particles of the anisotropic magnet powder have a flat shape, and an axis of easy magnetization of each anisotropic magnet powder particle is oriented toward a fixed direction to a flat face of the anisotropic magnet powder particle. In the compacting step, the powder mixture is compacted with no magnetic field applied thereto during at least part of a period from the start of the compaction of the powder mixture to the end thereof.
